The Improvement of the Modified Starch—Glucomannan—Polyvinyl Alcohol Biothermoplastic Composite Characteristics With Polycaprolactone and Anhydride Maleic Acid

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations polycaprolactone (PCL) and anhydride maleic acid (AMA) produce a biothermoplastic composite (BtC) modified cassava starch–glucomannan–polyvinyl alcohol (MSGPvA) that meets Indonesian National Standard (SNI) International Bioplastic Standards such as ISO 527/1B, PCL from UK, ASTM 5336 for PLA plastic Japan. This measured tensile strength ratio Young's modulus MSGPvA BtC compared commercial (CBt), elongation at break, swelling, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), biodegradation time. In addition, surface profile, functional group, crystallinity, thermal stability were also observed, which analyzed qualitatively quantitatively. with 20% 3.5% AMA able increase improve strength, modulus, WVTR, degradation 5% 0.5% has transverse profile shows presence clear wavy fibers an elongated indistinct waves, containing OH group wavenumbers 2,962.66 3,448.72 cm −1 C=O wavenumber 1,735.93 , low crystallinity degree but relatively high stability. All characteristics have met SNI (ISO England, Japan), except swelling characteristics. Thus, potential be used food packaging material.
